Extensive outreach campaign emphasizes mental health treatment services, prevention and early intervention

Delaware Children’s Department and its Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services (PBH) are partnering with child care providers, mental health professionals, partner agencies and Rita’s Water Ice locations across Delaware.

To coincide with “May is Mental Health Awareness Month” and the 7th annual National Child Mental Health Awareness Day, the Children’s Department and PBH have scheduled events across the state to raise awareness about the importance of mental health, increase understanding of the mental health needs of children and their families and provide information on accessing service.

Events will include: A Night with the Blue Rocks: Go Green For Mental Health; Delaware Prevention & Behavioral Health Forum at the Dover Sheraton; a special program for select child care providers to engage children on the importance of their own mental health; and Get the Scoop on Mental Health outreach, which includes information sharing and free Rita’s Water Ice at participating locations.

The extensive outreach and awareness efforts are part of the national “Caring for Every Child’s Mental Health Campaign,” which seeks to raise awareness about the importance of children’s mental health. An estimated 4.5 to 6.3 million children and youth in the United States suffer from a serious emotional disturbance. Approximately 65% to 80% of these children and youth do not receive the specialty mental health services and supports they need. This data and our efforts are meant to underscore the importance of programs and treatment services designed to reach young children and families before problems are deeply entrenched and require restrictive and costly intervention.
