Delaware Children’s Department Promotes “Children’s Mental Health Matters”

Day-long outreach campaign to emphasize mental health treatment services, prevention and early intervention

Governor Markell, First Lady Carla Markell, Lt. Governor Matt Denn and Delaware Children’s Department Secretary Vivian Rapposelli are partnering with child care centers, mental health providers, partner agencies and Rita’s Water Ice locations across Delaware.

To coincide with “May is Mental Health Awareness Month” and the 5th annual National Child Mental Health Awareness Day, the Children’s Department’s Division of Child Mental Health Services has scheduled events across the state and throughout the day to raise awareness of the importance of mental health, increase understanding of the mental health needs of children and their families, and provide information on accessing service.

Events will include: When I Grow Up – Daycare Dress-up, with participation from the Lt. Governor, First Lady and Secretary Rapposelli; a proclamation reading by Governor Markell at Legislative Hall; and Get the Scoop on Mental Health outreach, which will include information sharing and free Rita’s Water Ice at participating locations.

Delaware is currently in the process of filling a critical gap in the state’s mental health system to serve young children from birth to 5 years old.  Through the federally-funded Delaware’s B.E.S.T. program (Bringing Evidenced-based System-of-care Treatment) for young children and their families, the Division is creating access and delivery of services for this special age group.

This year’s celebration will focus on early childhood mental health and the importance of programs and treatment services designed to reach young children and families before problems are deeply entrenched and require restrictive and costly intervention.
