Academic Education
The Ferris Mentor Program currently has 25 active mentors. Mentors work with students in the following areas: math/all areas; reading/Pre-GED/GED; content areas (Social Studies & Science, Language Arts/Writing). Mentors work weekly, for one hour, during school hours. In addition, some mentors work with students after school hours. Groupings can be one on one or small group. Mentors play an important role in student motivation and success and are effective in clarifying learning for their students. Mentors are trained to pre-teach, review and evaluate skills. They build positive relationships with students. To illustrate the effectiveness of mentors on their students, one student recently said, “My mentor teaches in the way that I learn best.” Currently, mentors are from DuPont, as well as DSCYF and the community.
