Community Services
Community Services is a part of the Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services continuum serving youth who have been adjudicated delinquent and ordered by the court to receive services. The Community Services unit provides probation and aftercare services to roughly 3,000 youth per year, in addition to overseeing approximately 47 contracts with providers offering residential and nonresidential programs and services.
In 2001, Community Services reengineered its casework for supervision of juveniles. The reengineering is in alignment with national juvenile justice practice principles for probation and aftercare supervision. It operates to reduce the risks to the public, youth are served in the least restrictive environment appropriate for their needs, and the families of the youth are strengthened through interventions.
Non-residential services include out-patient treatment for substance abuse, sex offender, and mental health services. In addition, we have two programs that serve low risk youth; "Back On Track" program and Project Redirect. Youth in these programs receive prevention education and fulfill their community service obligations. Residential programs include foster care, group care, staff-secure residential treatment programs, in-patient substance abuse treatment and secure locked placements.
