There are four positions available when owning, operating, and/or working in a large family child care home: licensee, LFCC provider, LFCC assistant with experience and training, and LFCC assistant without experience or training.

Licensee:

  • Be at least 21 years old;
  • Have at least 24 months of experience working with children in a group setting; and
  • Have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent from an accredited high school.

Large Family Child Care Provider:

  • Be at least 21 years old;
  • Have at least 24 months of experience working with children in a group setting; and
  • Have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent from an accredited high school;

And successful completion of at least ONE of the following qualifications:

  • Training for Early Care and Education 1 and 2;
  • A Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) that is kept valid/current;
  • Delaware Department of Labor’s Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program;
  • A high school diploma from a vocational/technical high school 3-year program in early childhood education approved by Delaware’s Department of Education;
  • 9 college/university credits – 3 in early childhood education, 3 in child development, and 3 in positive behavior management;
  • 1-year early childhood diploma program from a 2-year college;
  • An Associate degree from an accredited college or university and 6 college/university credits of child development or early childhood education; or
  • Qualified as an at least an early childhood teacher as per DELACARE: Rules for Early Care and Education and School-Age Centers.

Large Family Child Care Assistant without Experience or Training:

A person with these qualifications cannot be left alone with children.

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent from an accredited high school;
  • Complete First Aid course and current certification in CPR within 6 months of the date of hire; and
  • Complete 12 clock hours of training within 12 months of the date of hire.  Training must include at least 3 clock hours in each of the following topic areas: child development, educational activities for children, positive behavior management, and families/communities; or
  • Become qualified as an early childhood intern as per DELACARE: Rules for Early Care and Education and School-Age Centers (2007) within 12 months of the date of hire.

Large Family Child Care Assistant with Experience and Training:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent from an accredited high school;
  • Have at least 6 months of experience working with children in a group setting;

And successfully complete at least ONE of the following:

  • 60 clock hours of training with at least a minimum of 3 clock hours in each of the core topic areas (see list below); or
  • 3 college/university credits in courses related to any of the core topic areas; or
  • Qualified as at least an early childhood assistant teacher as per DELACARE: Rules for Early Care and Education and School-Age Centers.

Core Topic Areas: child development; developmental curriculum planning/environment and curriculum; positive behavior management /social-emotional development; observation and assessment; health, safety, physical activity, and nutrition; family and community; professionalism; and management and administration.
