Children’s Department Spotlights Youth in Foster Care Looking for a Place to Call Home

Each week throughout November, a Delaware child in foster care will be highlighted to raise awareness of National Adoption Month and help find a permanent placement for a child in need.

Wilmington, DE —On any given day, dozens of children in Delaware are looking for a permanent place to call home. In an effort to showcase the unique and diverse qualities of these children and link them with a loving and supportive family, the Delaware Children’s Department developed a Heart Gallery by working with local photographers to create portraits of children currently available for adoption. The portraits are showcased at various locations across the state, throughout the year. In 2008, the Heart Gallery was launched online and highlights two children or sibling groups each month through photos and a brief description. Since 2007, 97 children have been highlighted through the Heart Gallery, either at an exhibit or online, and 64 have begun or completed the adoption process.

Nationally, November is recognized as Adoption Month.  As part of the Department’s outreach efforts this year, a child in foster care who is currently available for adoption will be selected each week in the month of November as a Heart Gallery supplemental spotlight. By sharing their stories and their smiles with the community, the Department hopes to find each child a family who will love them and nurture their spirit.
