Children’s Department Spotlights Youth in Foster Care Looking for a Place to Call Home

Each week throughout November, a Delaware child in foster care will be highlighted to raise awareness of National Adoption Month and help find a permanent placement for a child in need.

Wilmington, DE —On any given day, dozens of children in Delaware are looking for a permanent place to call home. In an effort to showcase the unique and diverse qualities of these children and link them with a loving and supportive family, the Delaware Children’s Department launched an online Heart Gallery in 2008. The gallery highlights two children or sibling groups each month through photos and a brief description. Since it was first launched in February 2008, 36 children have been highlighted and 16 have begun or completed the adoption process.

Nationally, November is recognized as Adoption Month.  As part of the Department’s outreach efforts this year, a child in foster care who is currently available for adoption will be selected each week in the month of November as a Heart Gallery supplemental spotlight. By sharing their stories and their smiles with the community, the Department hopes to find each child a family who will love them and nurture their spirit.

Week Three: Nyaire

hg_200809_Jowelle_lg.jpg NYAIRE was born in 1999 and is a very affectionate, extremely intelligent, African-American boy.  He loves to laugh, play outside, shoot hoops, and ride his bicycle.  He attends regular counseling to help him express his feelings in an appropriate manner.  Wouldn’t you love the opportunity to become the adoptive family he awaits?

In addition to month long awareness efforts around adoption, the 3rd Annual National Adoption Day will be celebrated tomorrow, Saturday, November 20, at the DelTech Terry Campus in Dover. National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the 129,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families.
