Children’s Department Spotlights Youth in Foster Care Looking for a Place to Call Home

Each week throughout November, a Delaware child in foster care will be highlighted to raise awareness of National Adoption Month and help find a permanent placement for a child in need.

Wilmington, DE —On any given day, dozens of children in Delaware are looking for a permanent place to call home. In an effort to showcase the unique and diverse qualities of these children and link them with a loving and supportive family, the Delaware Children’s Department launched an online Heart Gallery in 2008. The gallery highlights two children or sibling groups each month through photos and a brief description. Since it was first launched in February 2008, 36 children have been highlighted and 16 have begun or completed the adoption process.

Nationally, November is recognized as Adoption Month.  As part of the Department’s outreach efforts this year, a child in foster care who is currently available for adoption will be selected each week in the month of November as a Heart Gallery supplemental spotlight. By sharing their stories and their smiles with the community, the Department hopes to find each child a family who will love them and nurture their spirit.

Week Two: Jamie

Picture of Jamie Jamie is an adorable little girl born in 1998, who loves Dora the Explorer, Tinkerbelle, Barbie, and anything PINK. Although she has a significant cognitive disability and some medical concerns, Jamie loves being involved in activities such as football games, hiking, and the zoo. Jamie has become very attached to her foster family in which she has absolutely blossomed. Jamie is presently attending a regular elementary school where she is in a special classroom. She thrives on routine and stability. Jamie needs a family to help her continue to grow and learn more about the wonderful things in the world. Can you be the one to help her?

In addition to month long awareness efforts around adoption, the 3rd Annual National Adoption Day will be celebrated on Saturday, November 20, at the DelTech Terry Campus in Dover. National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the 129,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families.
