About Behavioral Health Problems in Children

The US Department of Health and Human Services has a lot of information on their “Families and Children” web page.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry  has a list of many issues that affect children on their Facts for Families web page..

Anxiety can affect children and adults. To find out more about anxiety go to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America at http://www.adaa.org/

Attention Deficit Disorder  Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) – This website tells about the disorder and how to get help. It also lets you know about support groups in your area.

Bi-Polar Disorder  The Child and Adolescent Bi-Polar Foundation (CABF) – This website provides a great deal of information about disorders that affect a person’s emotions.

Eating Disorder   This website has a great deal of information about the different types of eating disorders, including  how frequent the problem is and the symptoms of eating disorders.

Drugs  Parents, the Anti-Drug. This website has everything a parent should know about drug abuse from how to talk about drugs and alcohol with your child to recognizing the signs and symptoms of substance abuse.

Family Education and Support  - This website was developed by the Division of Child Mental Health Services in collaboration with the University of Delaware, center for Disabilities Studies. Click on Parent Information and find  “The Parent and Caregiver Survival Guide”  and “About Kids – For Kids” 

Fire-Setting  The Delaware Fire Marshal’s Office sponsors the Juvenile Fire-Setter Intervention Program.

Gambling  Youth can be addicted to gambling just as adults can. Delaware Council on Gambling Problems, Inc. has important information about the number of youth involved in gambling in Delaware. Their website also has a hotline to call if you are wondering if a loved one has a gambling problem.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder  The National Child Traumatic Stress Network  brings together the newest research on the signs, symptoms and treatment for children who have experienced trauma. There is a special section on their website for parents.

Pregnancy Prevention   Teen Wire is a site for teen girls by Planned Parenthood. It is a place where teens can get information and news about teen sexuality, sexual health, and relationships. Planned Parenthood specifically asks parents and health educators not to participate in the online discussions, they are directed to the Planned Parenthood site.

Self Injury, You Are Not the Only One  This site includes a lot of information, from a quick primer for those who are unfamiliar with self-injury, to a self-help page for self injurers who are feeling the impulse. Up front, this site warns that there is information here that may be a trigger for those who self-injure; those pages seem to be well defined.

Sexual Issues  Advocates for Youth is dedicated to creating programs and promoting policies which help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health. The Fact Sheets cover many  topics such as dating violence, gay/lesbian/bisexual youth, gender bias, and peer education, as well as contraceptive use, sexual abuse, and adolescent child-bearing.

Violence Against Self and Others (Suicide, School Violence, Bullying)  The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center provides information for parents and youth about the problems of violence facing young people today.
